Private island off ‘Britain’s most beautiful short cut’ brought to market on Scotland’s west coast

Savills is bringing to market Harbour Island (Eilean dà Mhéinn), a distinctive private island set just off Crinan Harbour on Scotland’s west coast, offering a unique blend of privacy, architectural design and natural beauty.

Extending to around 9.7 acres, the island enjoys a rare balance of seclusion and accessibility, lying just a short boat journey of approximately 300 metres from the mainland. It sits at the western end of the Crinan Canal, widely known as “Britain’s most beautiful short‑cut”, linking Loch Fyne to the Sound of Jura and placing Harbour Island within one of the country’s most celebrated coastal settings.

An entirely unspoilt haven, the island is defined by a rich and varied landscape, where gently sloping lawns give way to mature woodland, rugged shoreline and a series of secluded beaches. Wildlife is abundant, with seals and seabirds regularly seen, and ever-changing views extend across to Jura, Scarba and Mull, as well as the surrounding mainland hills.

At its heart sits an award-winning, architect-designed house, comprehensively renovated to create a contemporary home that responds sensitively to its surroundings. Extending to approximately 2,370 sq ft, the house has been carefully designed to maximise light, outlook and connection to the outdoors.

The ground floor is introduced by an impressive double-height entrance hall, with much of the bedroom accommodation located on this level, including the principal suite with dressing room, generous en suite and a conservatory overlooking the garden. A cosy sitting room, additional bathroom, and a large, well-equipped utility and boot room - complete with shower - reflect the practicalities of island living.

The first floor forms the architectural focal point of the house, with a spectacular open-plan living space. Vaulted ceilings, Velux windows and a striking full-height glazed gable draw in natural light and frame uninterrupted views across the Sound of Jura. Glazed doors open onto a raised timber deck, ideal for outdoor dining and entertaining, with direct access to a wood-fired hot tub.

Set within its own woodland setting, The Witch’s Folly provides a charming self-contained cabin, offering additional guest or creative accommodation. A range of further outbuildings, including a boathouse, workshop, greenhouse and wood store, support both practical use and lifestyle.

Access to the island is straightforward via two well-positioned pontoons at Crinan Harbour, while the nearby town of Lochgilphead offers a wider range of amenities. Oban, approximately an hour to the north, provides further connectivity as the gateway to the Western Isles.

Iona Conn of Savills comments: “Harbour Island offers a highly unusual proposition:  complete privacy within a remarkably short distance of the mainland. It is uncommon to find this level of seclusion combined with such ease of access.  What makes it particularly special is the relationship between this beautiful house and its setting. The design has been carefully considered to maximise light, views and connection to the landscape, creating a home that feels both anchored within and protected by its surroundings.

“It presents a very compelling lifestyle opportunity on the west coast - particularly for buyers seeking space, privacy and a strong connection to the natural environment, without feeling remote.”
