Savills brings Herefordshire school to market

The land and buildings of an independent preparatory school in Herefordshire have been brought to the market through Savills.

The Downs Malvern, located in Colwall, has been put up for sale as a result of the school’s relocation to a new site at Malvern College at the end of Summer 2027.

Set on the western slopes of the Malvern Hills, The Downs Malvern extends to approximately 5.97 hectares (14.75 acres) and comprises a broad range of education buildings and facilities, together with four residential properties. The site has a total gross internal area of approximately 80,535 sq ft (7,482 sq m).

The property has operated as an educational facility since 1900 and today includes the principal school building, classroom blocks, a memorial hall, music school, art studio, sports hall, boarding accommodation and associated playing facilities, including tennis courts, an artificial turf pitch and playing field. Within the grounds are seven standalone education buildings and four residential properties currently occupied by school staff.

Located around three miles from Great Malvern and five miles from Ledbury, Colwall benefits from rail connections to Hereford, London Paddington and Birmingham New Street, while the site also offers access to the wider motorway network via the M5 and M50.

The property is being offered for sale freehold, subject to contract and with vacant possession following the school’s relocation.

Subject to necessary planning consents, the site could be suited to a range of future uses including education, community facilities, hotel, leisure or residential.

Olivia Haslam, development director at Savills, said: “The Downs Malvern represents an exciting opportunity to acquire a substantial and well-established educational estate in a highly attractive setting. With extensive buildings and grounds, excellent connectivity and scope for continued education use or alternative uses subject to planning, it offers purchasers the chance to shape the ongoing legacy of this historic property.”
