Global port snapshot

Global cargo volumes rose sharply in 2024, driven by strong growth across all regions, with shifting trade dynamics reshaping the future of global port activity

Global annual cargo volumes increased by 7.3% in 2024 to 504.7 million TEUs, based on analysis of 50 of the world’s largest ports by volume. Ports across all regions saw increases in activity, though the pace of expansion varied significantly.

The top five busiest ports in East Asia accounted for over one-third of the total global volume moving through the top 50 ports, with Shanghai alone processing 51.5 million TEUs. Overall, the Asia Pacific region saw a 6.4% increase in container shipments, led by Melbourne and Port Botany (Sydney), both of which saw circa 9% increases in TEU activity.

The top 15 North American ports handled 61.3 million TEUs in 2024 – a strong 11.2% increase on the previous year, marking the third busiest year on record. This growth is attributed to multiple factors, including businesses front-loading shipments in anticipation of potential tariff changes.

The four largest Middle Eastern ports processed 33.8 million TEUs, up 15% on the previous year. This reflects the region’s growing importance as a global transhipment and logistics hub, supported by major infrastructure investment and strategic positioning along key trade corridors.

Northern and Mediterranean Europe ports posted solid annual growth in TEU activity (7% and 4%, respectively). In Northern Europe, stabilising consumer demand and easing inflationary pressures supported steady trade flows, while in the Mediterranean, improving connectivity and a rebound in regional exports contributed to continued gains.
